At Mondi Syktyvkar, the STEP project, featuring state-of-the-art technologies and equipment, completely modernized two paper machines to raise the production of board and paper by more than 20%, which amounts to over a million tons of paper, board and market pulp per year.
The € 545-million mill-wide modernization project is the largest investment project in the Russian pulp and paper industry in the past three decades.
An important part of the modernization of the Mondi Syktyvkar PM 21 was the installation of a new coating section featuring the HSM machine from UMV. Its top-of-the-line performance enables production on PM 21 of a range of high-quality white-top kraftliner as well the ability of the mill to meet customers’ highest expectations. UMV is very happy to be among the chosen suppliers for this project and highly appreciate the successful cooperation between UMV, Mondi and Bellmer in this installation.
The rebuild of PM 21, a white-top kraftliner board machine, marks the culmination of the STEP project. The 6300 mm wide machine now runs at 800 m per minute. It was first put into operation in 1969.
“PM 21 rebuild very successful”
According to mill officials, the rebuild of PM 21 is successful and the machine is now truly state-of-the-art boasting innovative technology and optimum process control.
“Most important is the fact that capacity now is totally different than earlier, and that we can now offer products of high quality to our customers in Russia as well as to the export market,” says Gerhard Kornfeld, the managing director at Mondi Syktyvkar.
